Blueberry – Vaccinium angustifolium

Family – Ericaceae

Height – 6”-2’

Flowers – whitish, bell-shaped, bloom from mid-May – June, .25” diameter

Fruit – small dark blue berry, sweet, up to .5” diameter

Leaf – alternate, simple, lanceolate, .33”-.75” long

Bark – reddish twigs

Habitat – woodlands to open areas; blueberries require full to partial sun.  They grow
 best in well-drained acidic soil.

Edible – Yes, wild blueberries can be eaten in the same ways as store-bought blueberries. 
They are smaller than the store-bought variety, but more intensely flavored. 

Notes – This is a fire-tolerant plant; it grows particularly well following a fire.
